From a young age, Kate Hallinan has known that she would dedicate her life to fighting injustice in the so-called criminal justice system. Raised in a family in which radicalism was tantamount to religion, Kate decided early on that she would devote her life to campaigning for issues of social justice. Kate believes the criminal justice system to be one of the greatest sources of oppression and inequality in the United States today, and she is passionate about fighting that inequality, one client at a time.

Raised in Berkeley, California, and a graduate of Berkeley High School, Kate attended Columbia University in the City of New York, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in American History. There, her studies focused on the history of slavery and injustice in the United States, and she learned about the similar role the criminal justice system plays in modern society.

At UC Hastings College of the Law, Kate excelled academically, while focusing her studies on criminal law. Kate graduated Summa Cum Laude from law school, earning the highest grade point average of any woman in her class.  She also earned the highest grade in seven of her courses throughout law school, including criminal procedure and constitutional law.

Upon completing law school, Kate immediately joined her comrades at Pier 5 Law Offices. There, she has had the opportunity to aid in the defense of a wide range of cases, including special circumstance homicide, federal drug cases, multiple co-defendant drug cases, and credit card fraud.

Kate’s practice covers a wide range of criminal cases, and includes trial work, appeals, and habeas. As an attorney, Kate focuses on the needs of her individual client, and seeks to provide the most zealous defense available, while fighting for the outcome that will be best for the particular client. Kate is thankful for her radical and experienced colleagues at Pier 5, and is grateful to work with individuals who share her passion and dedication for fighting for what is right.

Kate is admitted to practice in all California state courts and the Federal Court of the Eastern District of California.
